Russian President Vladimir Putin told his people he intended to ‘demilitarise and de-Nazify Ukraine’ when justifying the invasion of Ukraine. These claims regarding Nazism in Ukraine were widely seen as unfounded. Greg Smith’s cartoon alludes to the formation in 1919 of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic, which was soon absorbed into the USSR.
