The Liberal Party’s opposition to the Voice amendment ensured the referendum would not have bipartisan support. John Spooner suggests that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, by failing to listen to regional perspectives (neglecting to ‘read the signs’), was putting the Constitution – a heavily laden coach, buckling under the weight of its political baggage – at risk of being towed away.
