Warning Signs

A woman holding a baby with a child by her side reads a sign that says, 'Danger zone – you are here,' surrounded by text such as 'poverty', 'police indifference', 'fear', 'homelessness.' She says, 'And they ask why we don't just leave.'

In this cartoon Fiona Katauskas lists the many challenges faced by victim-survivors of gender-based violence. The emotional weight comes from the three figures: a young child clinging to its mother, a defenceless baby clutched to its mother's chest and an anxious mother. Katauskas shows us the incredible responsibility these women bear and how leaving a violent relationship is only half the battle.
