COVID-19 triggered the emergence of conspiracy theories, behavioural changes and new turns of phrase. Here Katauskas depicts the so-called ‘Bunnings Karen’, a pejorative term based on a Melbourne woman who filmed herself refusing to wear a mask during the city’s second wave. This and similar events prompted legal and human rights organisations to speak out in order to correct misguided notions that mask requirements breached human rights or the Constitution.
