The World Health Organization declared the outbreak of monkeypox to be a global emergency on 24 July, two months after the first case had been reported in Australia. The local outbreak appeared to peak in August. David Pope suggests that ‘pestilence’ is managing to pip his apocalyptic horsemen colleagues for employee of the year, despite the damage caused by record floods, wildfires in America and Europe and the war in Ukraine.
