Terror Australis

The year began with a spate of shocking reports of domestic violence. Moir suggests that for too many women, Terra Australis (an early European term for a hypothesised ‘Southern Land’) has become a place of terror. Anthony Albanese responded by calling an emergency Cabinet meeting and committing close to $1 billion to address the issue. The funding is intended to help victim-survivors leave violent relationships, and to fund longer-term measures, such as combatting online misogyny.
