Rumours of a negotiations between the Solomon Islands and China to develop a security pact began to circulate in August 2021. The draft agreement between the two nations emerged on Twitter in March 2022, and a month later the formal agreement was announced by China. The Labor opposition called it ‘the worst Australian foreign policy failure’ in the Pacific since the Second World War.
